Ancestors
of Miles Hochstein (Great Great Grandmother)
Chaya
Hochstein/Hockstein
Maiden name and birth and death dates unknown.
Presumed to have
been born and to have died in Radoshkovitz, Vilna Province.
|
Daughter
of Unknown Parents
Wife
of Yitzchak Hochstein,
the Melamed
Mother
of three children who immigrated to America, Zelig (aka Joseph)
Hockstein (grandfather of Donald Hockstein), Reb
Yoshe Hochstein, and Samuel Hochstein (ancestor of Janice
Koicil), and probably others who are unknown.
|
Chaya appears
in the memoir of Phillip Hochstein in only one unique scene, the journey
she and Yitzhak took to arrange a betrothal for their son Yoshe. This
scene is the only story we have of her actions separate from those of
her husband Yitzhak Hochstein,
the Melamed. The complete story told by Phillip Hochstein about how
Yoshe fled his betrothal can be found on Reb
Yoshe's page.
|
Chaya,
fearful of the threatened storm when father and son would face
each other, attempted lame excuses [for Yoshe's escape from
the betrothal agreement] but succeeded only in sharpening her
husband's anger.

I would
say that this is more likely a creative fiction on Phillip Hochstein's
part than an actual report of Chaya's personality, but it is closer
to the reality of her life than anything else it is possible to
know. It is the representation of a her life that her grandson Phillip,
who last saw her at age 5 when he left for America, chose for her.
